**PRINT: THE2NDHAND’s 31st broadsheet features a short by Portland-by-way-of-Montana writer Aaron Parrett that captures the power and glory of ambivalence after, during, and prior to what the unemployed poet-protagonist comes to clearly see as, if not love, then surely "Tolerance," the story's title. Parrett is the author of The Translunar Narrative in the Western Tradition as well as numerous stories that have been featured in lit mags around the nation. No. 31 also features a piece by Kyle Beachy, author of the newly released novel The Slide, out from Dial Press, and a vanguard discount coupon and special FAQ from the herbal remedies and soap makers at The Left Hand (thelefthand.net).

TWO MATURE WOMEN GABBING OVER COFFEE
---
Daniel Gallik

"Prosperity is luck. Period."

"I don't know about that. How about inventions?"

"Sure, you're saying if I am smart and invent something everyone wants, I will be wealthy."

"Yes."

DecomP Magazine

"The luck part is that it is needed to find something that no one has and everyone wants, and is willing to pay for. Like they can't copy your idea and sneak their own ideas into your formula."

"You're saying most of the economy is like a lottery?"

"Yes."

"What about the definition of wealth?"

"Yeah, it's not just having a lot of money. It's having control. It's having the history to deal with the wealth. It's a lot of things. But, what I am saying is that the initial burst is luck."

"Let's drink to this."

"What?"

"To this finding of yours."

"I am not going to drink to luck."

"Pardon?"

"It's stupid to drink a sip of coffee to such a thing."

"Huh?"

"I think drinking is important. Drinking is not luck. Drinking is a measured response to love."

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"I feel drinking is the essence of life. You are an adult. You are successful because you feel not at all unlucky or lucky with your status. You feel relaxed and ready for whatever luck comes or does not come your way. You take a slug, and smile towards fate."

"It's like being right around the corner."

"Yes, you have it."

"Or not." The two looked into each other's eyes and smiled. The deep emotions of their little village in northeast Ohio sighed. A quiet that had descended within their lives mixed with the tiny amount of chaos and formed a mixture of milk and mocha.
